چکیده

This article presents an experimental study of the effects of raised ambient temperature in dies and punches on the compaction of pharmaceutical powders. The experiments use an instrumented hydraulic press having a temperature-controlled enclosure allowing the ambient temperature of die and punch to be varied from 20 to 57 8C. A pharmaceutical powder was compacted at temperatures in this range and mechanical parameters, such as stress transfer ratio, stress transmission ratio, and die-wall friction, were analysed to examine the effects of heat transfer between tools and powder. In particular, it is shown that increasing the environmental temperature of die and punch increases the transfer ratio and the die-wall friction. The radial pressure is also slightly increased at the first stages of the compaction. However, the stress transmission is reduced by increasing the temperature. This may indicate an increase of shear stress. It is also observed that the particles undergoing compaction are ‘softened’ by increase of the temperature. This softening is certainly due to rise in temperature of the powder generated by the compaction and by the heat flux transfer between the die and the tablet. It is suggested that these effects could be important in industrial tablet production installations without air conditioning and thus subject to variations in ambient temperature.

Numerical Simulation on Pharmaceutical Powder Compaction

In this paper, we present a modified density-dependent Drucker-Prager Cap (DPC) model with a nonlinear elasticity law developed to describe the compaction behavior of pharmaceutical powders. The model is implemented in ABAQUS with a user subroutine. Using microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) Avicel PH101 as an example, the modified DPC model is calibrated and used for finite element simulations of ...

Background & Aim:  The hot water extract of a mixture of Anogeissus leiocarpus and Prosopis africana is widely used in the northern part of Nigeria for the treatment and management of asthma. Since investigations of its pharmacological activities already justify its use, and the need for standardization of herbal medicine and develop appropriate dosage forms has continued to g...

A study on the sensitivity of Drucker–Prager cap model parameters during die compaction of pharmaceutical powders

In powder die compaction, the characteristics of the end product are dictated by the mechanical properties of the powder being processed. A commonly used constitutive model describing the behavior of pharmaceutical powders during compaction is the modifi ed-Drucker Prager Cap (DPC) model. The experiments used to measure DPC parameters are time consuming and, hence, limit the model’s wide-spread...

Magnetic and Electrical Properties of Nanocrystalline Fe85Si10Ni5/Phenolic Resin Soft Magnetic Composites

In this work, nanocrystalline Fe85Si10Ni5 soft magnetic powders were prepared by mechanical alloying and subsequent annealing to reduce the internal stresses and lattice strains. The powders were mixed with phenolic resin and warm pressed to produce nanostructured soft magnetic composites. The effect of annealing time and temperature on the crystalline structure, microstructure and magnetic pro...
